I wrote previously about my voyage as
Captain Pill on the high seas of pharmaceuticals,
and my
return to port. Well this week I had my first shot across the bow in my pill voyages when a scurvey pirate
named Dr. Roberto Meza wrote a hostile
review on amazon.com for my book
Before You Take That Pill
which he entitled "a thousand thumbs down!". Well I have to admit it was nice
to have another opinion rather than just be simply ignored (I mean there has to be
someone out there who doesn't like a book subtitled "Why The Drug Industry May Be
Bad For Your Health", right?) or get pats on the back from friends, but when he insulted my research on the relationship
between the acne medication Accutane and depression and suicide (gasp!) I just had to take
my glove off and give him a slap. He may have gotten upset with me because he has been
obsessively emailing me every week for the past two years asking me about my research
and I finally stopped responding. My conclusion is that since he is a dermatologist he
either had a bad outcome giving a patient Accutane or he is working for Roche. Anyway
his conclusion that tylenol could kill you or you could die from slipping on a bar of
soap is hardly reassuring. I thought our fairly polarized approaches to the value of
healthcare consumer education and his comment that this was a "VERY DANGEROUS" book
(caps are his, not mine) might provoke some interesting discussion so I started a
discussion forum on amazon.com.
Anyway now I am getting a little sea-sick from all of this naval combat so I am going to
lean my sword against the wall (although my critics would probably prefer
that I leaned against my sword) and take off my swashbucklers (whatever they are).
Oh btw me and Mrs. Pill are going to take sailing lessons so I am going to learn
what a 'bow' actually is. Land-ho! (or whatever you say)
