More on Disclosures and Response to Criticisms

Bernard Carroll, MD, has pointed out on several occasions on the internet that I signed a letter in support of Charles Nemeroff, MD, PhD, to the WSJ in 2006 after the journal wrote a critical article regarding nondisclosure of conflicts of interest in a paper about Cyberonics, and he has been critical of me as condoning bad behavior and therefore being therefore "no better" than others. The fact that the authors essentially comprised the Scientific Advisory Board of Cyberonics should have been disclosed in addition to other sources of funding and potential conflicts. At the time it was stated to be a mistake which is why I signed the letter. Since then there have been other reports of non dislosure that I have written about on this site and elsewhere, so that in retrospect it probably was not a good idea. In 2006 I was writing my book Before You Take That Pill: Why the Drug Industry May Be Bad For Your Health which is critical of the excessive influence that the pharmaceutical industry has on research and academic physicians, so my more recent writings on this site and others criticizing pharma influence is nothing new. I have previously posted about disclosure of my own conflicts of interest (which are posted at the top of all of my sites). Although I have consulted and given lectures in the past that were funded by industry I do not do so now and have not for the past two years, and have not had any research funded for the past three years, although I did previously.
