Very good articles thank you for collecting information on this topic. I just found you after reading about this issue in the NYT. I hope they are able to find some sort of solution for the people who were in their care.

To be fair. While this is a real example of a death panel it is also a real example of an entitlement mentality. I would say the best way to treat this kind of problem is to figure out how to reform immigration so we were able to effectively collect some taxes from healthy immigrants that could help to defer some of the health care costs of immigrants who are less fortunate. If they were able to collect money, it could work as most immigrants are younger and younger people tend to be realitively healthier. Having a waiting period is reasonable, as that keeps the incentive down for people on deaths door from moving here just for treatment rather then to participate in economic activity.

For cases like the 78 year old woman who was a year away from legal medical treatment it might be better if she was able to apply for some kind of private charity as she just needs to make it through one year. And really as she's almost 80 and has gone through the legal process of becoming a resident, she definately qaulifies for some our sympathy as someone who is near the natural end of the human lifespan and just needs some help like our own elderly.

I am not sure if this decision is good and it is certainly abrupt, but I don't know how they could continue to lose money indefinately like this either. I don't see how they could keep the hospital open at all. If the doctors are upset about the disruption of care maybe they could keep some hours open on a volunteer basis and just freeze enrollment and find other options for their current patients. Closing it down in a few years is a more reasonable time for a transition then a months time. It would also be easier on their american patients who are going through the paperwork of applying for medicaid.

Of course by their current actions, they have already trimmed the amount of people needing their services by 1/3 so maybe there were some people who were just not using all their available resources.

Excellent coverage of a complex issue. "Real death panels" as opposed to the imagined ones of health care reform opponents. Unfortunately, current health care reform proposals do not appear to be of much help to hospitals such as Grady, which provide the bulk of uncompensated care all over the country. Even the best of scenarios will be too little too late unless there is some dramatic change. (not likely given the present economic climate and the entitlement mentality of the middle class.)
