A recent report from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) shows that daily aspirin in people without a history of heart disease will prevent heart attacks in men, and strokes in women.
this recent study and accompanying editorial in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that is hot off the press showed a three fold risk of cardiac sudden death in healthy women on antidepressants…
Mrs. Bremner and I are at the American Psychosomatic Society (APS) Annual Meeting in Chicago this week where the most interesting presentation other than our poster and talk on brain and heart mechanisms mediating the increased risk for mortality in people with heart disease and depression, is this late breaking data [...]
This week’s JAMA has an article that evaluates guidelines written for the appropriate treatment of a variety of cardiac conditions. These are guidelines written by experts in the field about appropriate treatments for a variety of conditions, from heart attacks to atrial fibrillation. The guidelines were ranked according to level of evidence, with guidelines [...]
This article just in from the Women’s Health Initiative Study, published in this month’s edition of the Archives of Internal Medicine, on the utility of taking multivitamins for postmenopausal women. Now since the marketing staff of the Drug Safety and Health News Blog have been conducting focus groups amongst the readers of the [...]
From our former colleague at Yale, cardiologist Barry Zaret MD, in the January 2009 edition of Psychosomatic Medicine, reads like a medical thriller:
In February 1997, I began a 4-month sabbatical leave from Yale School of Medicine where I had been a faculty member since 1973 and Chief of Cardiology since [...]
A study of 16,690-persons whose results were released today by Medco Health Solutions found that patients taking Plavix (clopidogrel) with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Nexium or Prilosec have a 50% increase in risk of major cardiovascular event and 74% increase in heart attacks compared to people taking Plavix alone. Since Plavix is [...]
Based on the results of the Jupiter Study, that a biomarker of heart disease, C-reactive Protein (CRP), predicts response to the drug Crestor (rosuvastatin) (and not just total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol), the authors of this study would apparently like us to come to the conclusion that, basically, all of us should be on a statin medication for the prevention of heart disease. In fact, I can already hear the shills and the media saying “revolutionary” and “likely to change practice”!
Plavix is touted as better than aspirin for the prevention of heart attacks but a study release today showed a 74% increase in heart attacks in Plavix users on Nexium or another PPI compared to those not on Nexium.
